I had previously written about Radtech’s OmniStand, a portable laptop stand constructed from 6013 Aluminum alloy (aiding in heat-dissipation). It sounded like exactly what I needed, since (as I also noted in that original post) my current iLevel Laptop Stand from Rain Design wasn’t the best at cooling. As such, I decided to pick up an OmniStand for myself.

The box/package the OmniStand ships in is so light and thin, I wasn’t even sure what it was when it arrived (short term memory loss probably doesn’t help). After unboxing, you can truly see why the portability factor is touted so much. When fully collapsed, it could fit in an appropriately-sized envelope.

After I placed the stand on my desk and found its best-suited inclination for my usage, it essentially vanished behind the MacBook Pro (The iLevel, by comparison, clearly makes its presence known on your desk as a girthy laptop stand —although it can also freely rotate). The sheet of metal your laptop physically sits on has pads to lift the computer off it, facilitating airflow and keeping the bottom from being scratched.

So, the OmniStand is trim, adjustable, and looks like a cool piece of industrial design. How about that cooling? I decided to put that to the test right off the bat, and booted into XP via Boot Camp to do some gaming. Dragon Age: Origins is a noted processor hog, and always revved my cooling fans up as soon as gameplay began. No sooner than 20 seconds in, the fans revved up as loud as they did when using the iLevel. Odd. The longer I played, the more I noticed no difference whatsoever in terms of audible fan noise than before the OmniStand was used.

Perhaps Dragon Age was too intense for an average test. I booted back into OS X, and did some average internet surfing of my favorite geek sites. iStat Pro revealed a CPU temperature of 145°F at certain points, and then in excess of 170°F when I hopped over to YouTube. Again, no better than the iLevel. Very disappointing. The OmniStand looks like it should be an effective cooling mechanism; the previously mentioned pads to lift your laptop, the holes punched into the aluminum to facilitate airflow…but that was not the case, in my usage.
